Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Umbwe Gate to forest camp

Climb a steep forest ridge where the narrow route gains altitude quickly. The guide enforces a conservative pace despite the direct terrain.

  2. Day 2: Umbwe Cave to Barranco

Continue through thinning vegetation toward Barranco Valley. The sudden elevation gain makes hydration, appetite and honest symptom reporting especially important.

  3. Day 3: Barranco acclimatisation

Use a dedicated day for a controlled acclimatisation walk and recovery at camp. This is not idle time; it moderates the route’s aggressive opening profile.

  4. Day 4: Barranco Wall to Karanga

Climb the wall with guide support, then cross a sequence of valleys to Karanga. Short scrambling sections require hands but no technical climbing equipment.

  5. Day 5: Karanga to Barafu

Move into alpine desert and arrive at summit camp early. Eat, drink, prepare layers and rest before the late-evening wake-up.

  6. Day 6: Uhuru Peak to Mweka

Attempt the summit under the stars, with turnaround decisions based on health, pace and conditions. Descend through Barafu to a lower forest-edge camp.

  7. Day 7: Mweka Gate

Walk down through rainforest to the gate, complete formalities and return by vehicle. This route is offered only after a frank conversation about experience and risk.
